The company was founded by John Morkes, PhD, after he served for many years as a Principal at Expero Inc. and the Director of Human-Computer Interaction at Trilogy Software. In a prior life, John was a technology journalist for Wired and R&D Magazine.
John is an expert in UX for complex domains as well as consumer sites, design thinking, UX strategy, managing UX projects, Lean/Agile UX, and training. His recent work is for B2B and B2C clients in healthcare, biotech, consumer electronics, information technology, semiconductors, energy, agronomy, automotive, financial services, and other industries.
He is an Advisor at data.world and other companies.
Through UX research and collaborative design, helped define a demo that secured $50 million in software development funding for the Texas Dept. of Family & Protective Services.
For Charles Schwab, conducted UX studies and made recommendations that decreased support costs by 52% and contributed to an online conversion rate increase from 11% to 22%, saving the company millions of dollars.
Conducted UX studies and dramatically improved websites for Nissan and Ford, which Forrester Research then named the two best consumer sites in the auto industry.
In response to commonly receiving murky and incomplete product requirements, co-created a Value measure and technique for users to evaluate the value of proposed features, functionality, content, data, products and websites.
Pioneered the Content Usability field with Dr. Jakob Nielsen by conducting early studies on how users read online. The resulting guidelines for how to write for the Web have been cited and written about thousands of times. They are included in industry style guides and university writing, journalism, UX and marketing programs around the world.
Trained more than 8,000 managers and UX practitioners through full-day tutorials at international Nielsen Norman Group UX conferences and custom training events for specific companies.
John has a PhD from Stanford University and MS and BA degrees from Northwestern University.
